As the Eucalyptus tree grows into maturity, the young, round, silvery blue green leaves turn into long sword like, deep green leaves. They then let off the camphoraceous scent of Eucalyptus. They have woody seed pods that dangle down from a creamy colour branch, which almost completely covers the budding blossoms. Thus the tree name, which came from the Greek word Eucalyptus...meaning covered or wrapped.

The oil has a refreshing, penetrating, stimulating scent that is almost medicinal. It takes about 50 pounds of eucalyptus leaves to produce one pound of clear or pale yellow oil.

Eucalyptus - Eucalyptus Globulus

Eucalyptus is native to Australia. It is the tallest tree on earth that sheds it leaves at the end of the growing season. Some trees grow to 500 feet. In Australia over 75% of all trees are the Eucalyptus. Worldwide there are over 500 different verities. They grow in the Mediterranean like climates of Ageria, California, Egypt, Hawaii, India, Portugal, South Africa and Spain. They are also grown and cropped in India, Latin America, South Africa, Southern Europe and Tahiti.

The most popular used in aromatherapy is Eucalyptus Globulus. There are several others which are used to produce the oil. Including the following, Eucalyptus Australiana, Eucalyptus Polybrachtea, Eucalyptus Radiata and Eucalyptus Smithii. Eucalyptus Citriodora has a citrus like scent. Eucalyptus Dives has a scent of peppermint. All the above mentioned are members of the Myrtaceae family.
