There are 3 different types of chamomile, German, Roman and chamomile mixta. They are members of the Asteraceae family all share similar properties.

Roman chamomile (Chamamelum Nobile or Anthemis Nobilis) has fine feathery leaves and has daisy like flowers which are white with bright yellow centres. It is a perennial plant, grows from 9 to 12 inches.
Native to Southern and Northern Europe. It is cultivated in Belgium, Bulgaria, England, France, Hungary and Italy. Renders a yellow oil with a sweet, warm herbaceous scent from steam distillation.

Chamomile

German chamomile (Matricaria Chamomilla or Matricaria Recutita) is similar to Roman chamomile, except taller. It is an annual plant, grows to 2 feet tall. The flowers have smaller heads and fewer petals. It was once native to Europe, and parts of Asia. Today it grows in Eastern Europe, Egypt, North America and in some areas of former Soviet Union.
It has been called Blue Chamomile. Its colour comes from a high content of azulene, a chemical component which is produced from the distillation process. It also has a strong anti-inflammatory action. The scent is stronger than Roman Chamomile. It has a sweet, slight fruity, slight spicy scent. It has almost an exciting scent.

Chamomile Mixta or Moroccan Chamomile (Anthemis Mixta) is a distant relative to the others. It does not appear as the others in similarity. It has hairy leaves and tubular yellow flowers. It is native to Northwestern Africa, Southern Spain, Egypt, Israel and Morocco. It has a spicy, fresh scent, with a balsamic undertone.

It helps reduce dryness, itching, redness and sensitivity to irritated, inflamed skin. Good for soothing dry or sensitive skin. Regular treatments can aid in reducing redness of fragile or broken capillaries. It helps condition hair and scalp, adds shine and lustre to hair.

Emotional Effects

Chamomile has a sedative action, milder than harsh or potentially habit forming prescription tranquilizers. It is calming and relaxing, can help in the aid of depression, insomnia and stress. It takes away some of the emotional charge of anxiety, irritability and nervousness. It can rid anger, help stabilize emotions and help release emotions linked to the past. If applied over the throat, it can help a person to express their true feelings.
