September Crystal of the Month Sapphire

Crystal Meaning: The name Sapphire is derived from the Sanskrit word “Sanipriya” that means dear to the planet Saturn and it is an important Vedic healing gem. It comes in a rainbow of colours (with the exception of red) but is most commonly blue in colour. It is second only to diamonds in hardness and is one of the world’s most popular gemstones. It is associated with serenity and peace of mind, concentration creative expression, loyalty and love.

Magical Use: Sapphire has a calming and focusing effect and as such is very useful for stilling the mind prior to meditation or prayer and can also help to release unwanted thoughts and mental clutter. It helps to achieve deeper levels of insight and intuition and is said to stimulate psychic abilities and clairaudience. Sapphire – particularly the blue variety – helps alleviate spiritual confusion and strengthens the links to our higher selves and our guides. It has been used in shamanic ceremonies in many cultures.

Healing Use: Sapphire calms and regulates many parts of the body. It is thought to have a cooling effect which is very useful in reducing inflammation, fevers and minor burns. It works on the digestive system, nervous system and meridians and also on the pituitary and thyroid glands. It can also be used for hearing problems and disorders of the blood. It is also said to strengthen the walls of the veins.

How to use: Traditionally, sapphire is worn on the right hand side of the body, and it is said to be most effective when worn in contact with the skin. When placed over the throat it opens and heals that chakra, facilitating communication on all levels.

How to Cleanse and Recharge: This is quite a hard crystal and as such is suitable for most types of cleansing, however, the darker colours may fade in strong sunlight. Suggested methods of cleansing and charging include visualisation where one visualises a bright white or golden light sweeping away negative energies and imbalances.

Also, leaving sapphire in direct moonlight on the night of the full moon is very effective at cleansing and recharging.

You can cleanse sapphire in spring water, or hold the crystal under a running tap while visualising the energies rebalancing.

Cleansing with reiki is also a useful method.
