Meditation and Visualization
Session 2 (05-08-03)

This is going to be an interactive healing circle for all levels of development. There are a number of healers here with a variety of experience so we have a wealth of knowledge among us to share. For those of you that were here for last weeks circle you will recall that we covered the reasons why meditation is needed.

This week we will continue with meditation only this time we will cover a very simple basic meditation method. We will not actually do the meditation because this type of meditation requires privacy.

What I am going to do is go over the method with you step by step to prepare you to do this on your own. This will afford you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have while we are going over it. If time permits we will go into the topic of visualization upon finishing with meditation This circle will be posted in the archive, so that you can copy and paste it, or review it from there.
It is my personal opinion, this is the best form of meditation for a beginner to start with, and I still use it at times myself.
Start by sitting up straight in a comfortable chair or sofa. Your feet should both be flat on the floor in front of you with your hands in your lap. Crossing your legs or stretching them out in front of you may be comfortable at first, but after a few minutes could cause tensions that will interfere with your ability to get the most out of your meditation. Some people believe that you must get into the lotus position (a yoga position) in order to successfully meditate. If you can get into this position comfortably, and maintain it comfortably for the duration of your meditation, and if you feel that it is necessary, OK. Just remember, it has to be comfortable. If it causes stress, or tension or any discomfort, then I suggest that you skip it
.
Close your eyes. Take three or four (or five or six) deep breaths in through your nose. As you inhale, you may find it helpful to picture a white light coming in with the air and filling your entire body. Then exhale through your mouth. As you exhale, picture all of your tensions and stresses flowing out with the exhaled air. Feel the tensions and stresses flowing out. Just let them go. Now let your mind become quiet and still. If a thought enters your head, don't try to suppress it, or stop and examine it, just let it drift on through. You may find some unusual thoughts passing through your head. You may also find yourself seeing pictures or visions. Or you may find yourself feeling things, unusual feelings or emotions. I have even heard bird songs and smelled flowers or perfume during a quiet meditation. Don't worry about it, just let them pass through. There will be plenty of time to think about it all and examine it later.
When you feel that you have been in a meditative state long enough, start coming back to the physical reality slowly. Take a few deep breaths and direct your attention toward your physical body. It may surprise you to discover that during the meditative state, you may have become completely unaware of your physical body. Don’t worry about it, that doesn't always happen, but it is not at all unusual.
When you feel that you are back in the here and now, open your eyes. If you happened to notice what time it was when you started your meditation, you may be in for another surprise when you open your eyes again Time doesn't seem to move at the same speed during meditation as it does normally. I sometimes meditate for what seems to be five minutes only to find that actually a half hour to an hour has passed. At other times I may meditate for what seems to be twenty minutes or a half hour and find that only five minutes has passed.
You may want to set a timer if you feel that you want to meditate for a certain period of time. If you do use a timer, use a gentle one; any raucous or loud noise can be quite a shock when you are in a meditative state. You may also want to turn off the ringer on the telephone during meditation. I have had the telephone ring when I was meditating and it was almost like someone had hit me.
After you are back in the here and now, you may want to examine the thoughts, sights and feelings that you experienced during your meditation. They can often be a source of insight into yourself, and after all this is the whole point of meditation.
If there are any questions at this point we will do our best to answer them.

(To provide privacy for all we have removed the names, as a guide to the conversation we have replaced them with the following -

G: = Guide
M: = Member
H: = Healer)

M: is there any kind of reality check between daydreaming and meditation? I often go into my own little planet, how would I know?

G: this brings up the question of what reality is. Imagination is a powerful tool,
Which you will soon discover.
M: I think its one of those things where if u haven't experienced it, like me, its
hard to visualize the feeling.

G: Being that we create our reality…….in a few minutes we are going to cover
The topic of visualization, you will see that it ties in with what we are now
Discussing.
M: I find the main difference is how I feel after, if I have been in meditation I feel
Calm and energized.
G: the calmness and energy can also exist after daydreaming.
G: I feel there is a slight diff. between daydream and meditation but I’m not
entirely sure what the difference is.

M: I never feel same if day dreaming, maybe each to their own
.
G: I get the same startle effect whether, I am daydreaming or in meditation. But then we are all different and perhaps experience things differently.

M: my view: meditation requires a large amount of focused internal energy. Often when tired / emotional / not focused we lack that focus and "will to enter meditation" and stray into day dreaming

G: The topic of visualization will perhaps bring us a little closer to understanding this.

Everyone is perfectly capable of using their imagination to build “detailed” fantasies in their mind’s eye, even though they may claim not to be able to visualize effectively. Something to keep in mind is Imagination IS visualization and visualization IS imagination. These are one and the same ability.

Memory plays an important part in imagination. Have you ever lost anything: your keys, a pen, your Mind, lol If you have, after searching in vane for the item, you probably tried to recreate the recent actions in your mind’s eye to help remember where you lost the item. You would have replayed these actions in your mind’s eye, going over every step. Recreating actions and events like this is pure mind’s eye imaging, the constructive use of imagination, based entirely upon memory. This is perfect visualization!! Everyone has the natural ability to do this whenever they want, perfectly…

Here is an explanatory exercise to try on your own when you are free from distraction. Get up and go to the kitchen, get a drink of water and then return to where you were. As you do this, take note of everything you do and see and feel along the way. After you have done this sit down and close your eyes and relax for a moment.

Remember what you just did from the very beginning and recreate this entire sequence of actions with your imagination, in your minds eye. It is important to feel everything as if you were actually doing it. This is exactly like creating a fantasy based upon real life events. Remember yourself getting out of the chair and standing and how the room looked as it moved around you as you turned.

Remember your steps as you walked towards the kitchen, what you saw and felt when you arrived. Remember how your hand felt and looked as it reached out for the glass, filling and drinking it, and how the water tasted, smelt and felt. Remember returning the glass and walking back to your original position and then sitting down again.

Do this in real time, taking roughly the same length of time recreating this in your mind’s eye as it took you to actually do it. With this exercise, you are recreating and replaying remembered actions in your mind’s eye. You will not actually see these actions, but you will be able to “perceive” them clearly in your mind’s eye.

This is exactly like any fantasy created in your mind’s eye, and you can almost see a good fantasy; they can be that realistic. Fantasy is the constructive use of imagination; something more commonly called “Visualization.”

Here is an exercise we can try right now; it will only take a min. or two.

Relax and with eyes closed I want you to construct a completely fictional scenario in your mind’s eye with all the necessary parts taken solely from your memories. I want you to remember, to fantasize, brushing you hair. Rehearse this in your mind, without actually doing it.

Imagine there is a table in front of you with a hairbrush lying atop it. Carefully feel yourself reaching out (with out actually doing it.) and taking the imaginary hairbrush and lifting it slowly to your head. Start brushing your hair. Feel your arm and hand moving as you do this in your mind’s eye. Feel your hand dragging the brush repeatedly through your hair. Imagine what the brush feels like as it moves through your hair and tingles your scalp. Finally, return the imaginary hairbrush to the imaginary table, and relax.

You must FEEL all these movements as you construct them in your mind’s eye. Do not physically move or try and actually see anything happening in your mind’s eye. Imagine and fantasize, feel and perceive them as happening in a real-time frame. You have created a concise construction of pure imagination (a complex fantasy), in the your mind’s eye.

This is how you follow a guided meditation. You don’t actually see what you visualize or imagine, but you have an incredible detailed awareness and perception of it all the same.

G: So many say they don’t know how to visualize, and I believe this is because visualization is not often understood or explained. Visualization is a very powerful tool, as you will soon discover in times to come. If any of you feel dizzy or nauseous at the moment it is because you have focused your energy out of your body for a few minutes. This will pass quickly.

G: This will help you to better understand exactly what you are doing in the.
Guided Meditation Circle and also in the Energy Circle

M: Yes I have a tingling on my head and ears at the moment.

M: Visualization is a powerful tool. It can be used for all sorts of things.

M: I think HMH's class has helped me allot to visualize tonight.

G: we will soon be covering shielding and you will know that you are able to
visualize for that circle.

M: I have a problem with the term “Guided Meditation”
For e.g.: when being guided in a meditation I can’t see what I am told to see.

G: Visualization ids created from memory.

M: So I got with the flow of what my perception is?

G: Yes exactly, you are creating your reality in your mind. What ever you create in your mind’s eye IS real. You will come to know this. This is a powerful tool in many ways i.e.: healing. Guided meditation is used in some hospitals in the battle against cancer, and the stronger the visualization the greater the effect.
One of the most important aspects to keep in mind is to FEEL what you are seeing. There is a link between telepathy and ability to feel what is in you mind. A thought can be projected as a FEELING and words are not needed the feeling tells the story, and feeling is what helps to make the visualization real. This will become clearer with experience. This circle will be posted in the archive for review

M: .You explain things really well and talk from experience

G: Thank you, I have had some awesome teachers. I am just passing on what has been lovingly shared with me.

I think we have covered a very large territory here.

H: If we could all quiet down and focus our energy right into our tummy’s, a warm glow gently spreading to fill all our cells. Spread the warmth and love of your presence to them, one at a time. Clear your body all the time of any obstructions by visualizing a strong flow of energy that MOVES all the time, through you and through the circle. Touching the ones that you focus on, and when you feel energy coming your way, do not turn it into images and visions, but let it just flow through you a gentle stream of healing reaching out and, when you are done, returning to your tummy where it curls up like a happy kitten and purrsssss …
